We finally had a deserved sneak peek this week of what the new library is going to look like inside. Actually they opened the doors to the press on Tuesday, September 27, and here we were, checking the amazing building designed by architect Francine Houben of Dutch studio Mecanoo.
Far from being just one more piece of a concrete placed in the heart of city centre, the new library is a cutting edge building that is promised to be the centre of learning, information and culture.
Opening to the visitors next week, on September 3rd, the space located at Centenary Square will attract over three million people during the year.
During the next four months the local is going to receive several events as well, from a sci-fi exhibition to theatrical performances.
Also refurbished, The Rep is now integrated to the library, creating a perfect combination of architecture between both buildings.
The ten-level library is already a Brummie landmark and even includes a special memorial, a perfect space where the world’s largest Shakespeare collection is housed.
The green area with two elevated terraces is something to be highlighted too. Everybody can appreciate a stunning view of the whole city centre and its iconic buildings from these green gardens.
A perfect space to chill out and bring your family to contemplate a different perspective from the city.
There are so many things to explore at the stunning new Library but it’s also important to remember that it’s officially now the biggest leading library in Europe.
A totally digitalised library, which means, not just free wifi points but also access to 240 computers in the building.
It’s definitely a new space for learning but it’s also an inspiring landmark of Birmingham ready to be explored by community and visitors from all over the world.
