On the trail of the Reformation – you can now go on a tour of discovery of Germany’s Lutheran sites using just your smartphone or tablet.
Martin Luther (1483-1546) was the monk who famously sparked the reformation of the church. Tradition holds that in 1517 he nailed 95 theses to the castle church in Wittenberg in protest against the Catholic Church selling indulgences.
This act triggered the start of church reformation in the Western world.
Luther made his mark not only in Wittenberg but also in many other towns in Saxony-Anhalt – including Eisleben, where the original settings of key Reformation events have been named UNESCO World Heritage sites for their universal importance.
The ‘Luther was here’ initiative was launched in October 2015 to make these sites easier to find and to bring them to life. As part of this scheme, Luther plaques featuring QR codes are being mounted at 60 sites in Saxony-Anhalt between now and August 2016. Visitors can scan the code for a website containing facts, pictures, quotations and sources that tell the story of Luther and the Reformation in that particular place.
2017 marks 500 years since Luther’s famous nailing of the theses, and throughout the year special events and celebrations will be taking place across Germany to honour the anniversary of the Reformation.
