Summer destinations| The ultimate guide to Dubrovnik, Croatia

For many of us in the UK, there is no sign of temperatures rising yet. No sunshine. No sign of warmer weather. On the other hand, it looks like summer is already around the corner in other parts of Europe. So, why not start to plan your short-haul holiday to shake things up a little?

I would recommend you heading to the Mediterranean Sea to discover Dubrovnik, one of the most inspiring cities located on the eastern side of the Adriatic Sea in Croatia.

Get to this remarkable destination in a three-hour flight from London (or you can fly from Manchester, if you are in the Midlands area), for a short break that will include a lot of history, great scenery and a fantastic gastronomic experience that will certainly make you forget the hustles and bustles of the everyday life.

Whether you may want to just to make the most of the clear and tranquil waters of the Adriatic Sea or want to have a stroll for the history of the city, Dubrovnik has plenty to offer to the visitors.

It’s also one of the most popular tourist spots in Europe, so it’s better to find the perfect accommodation as soon as possible, so as not to miss the chance of making the most of it.

I have been to Dubrovnik for a short break and it’s certainly a place that made me want to go back for more. Always.

It’s certainly different from other popular (and cheap) Europeans destinations that try hard to make you “feel home away from home” selling fish and chips at every other corner.

Dubrovnik makes you embrace the local culture in a high level of satisfaction. It’s a perfect spot for families, couples and friends that are looking for a classy getaway.

So, here’s my ultimate outdoor guide for a special holiday steeped in history and a lot of sunshine to catch up with:

Explore the historic streets and alleys of the Old Town

The best way to explore The Old Town in Dubrovnik is walking. It’s also fairly mergeable on foot city. There are plenty of guided tours to join, but you can also go for a solo adventure on it.  The starting point is The Stradun (or Placa); the stunning limestone-paved main street of Dubrovnik dated back to the 13th century.

This ancient road stretches for 300 metres connecting most of the historic building in the town. Expect a complete indulgence in the history checking the Church of St. Savior, Rector’s Palace, Sponza Palace, the Cathedral of the Assumption and other fascinating constructions around.

Be seduced by its diverse cuisine

After walking for so long in the old town, nothing better than treating yourself with some magnificent food. I am not joking, it was in Dubrovnik that I had some of the best meals of my life. Its rich gastronomic offer several types of cuisine, from Italian to Japanese.

It’s possible to eat spectacularly well in Dubrovnik. But if I had to repeat the whole experience, I would stick with the local cuisine eating at Mediterranean restaurants spread in the whole town.

Extra tip: Ask for anything that includes squid. Believe me, the combination of the famous Croatian olive oil with this any kind of seafood make you come back for more. And more.

 Must do boat trips

If you came all the way along from the UK to enjoy the stunning waters of the Mediterranean Sea, it’s priority to explore it by boat. There are several types of boat trips in and nearby Dubrovnik.

A highly recommended spot is the island of Lokrum. This fascinating piece of land is surrounded by peacocks and rock beaches.

Lokrum is also famous for being one of the filming locations of Game of Thrones. All the boat trips start in The Old Harbour; another must-see location in the Old town.

Extra Tip: Don`t miss the chance to eat in the restaurant of the Lokrum Island and ask for a local wine to make the experience a bit more exciting. Don`t be afraid of trying the Croatian liqueurs either They area true gem and taste delicious.

Check break-taking views of the city by a cable car

The cable car station is on the Hill Srd. This quirky mean of location was built in 1969, and back that time, it was the only cable car in the Adriatic.

The trip from bottom to the top Station where is the Imperial Fort lasts only 4 minutes. But many people say it will be one of the best 4 minutes spent when in Dubrovnik. Enjoy breathtaking views of the town and surrounded areas.

Making the most of Dubrovnik Riviera

If your plan is only soaking in the sun, Dubrovnik can make your dream come true in great style. From sandy to pebbles to secluded beaches, there is always a perfect spot to go for a swim or only enjoy the stunning sunset in this town.

There are even Naturalist beaches to the most adventurous. One of the most popular ones is the Copacabana beach. It’s not quite like the famous one in Rio de Janeiro. But I guess it has its own magic too.
