How are They Made?

Coffee tonic or cold brew tonic is made with the same methods as a cold brew, however, the twist comes from adding extra ice and tonic water to the mix.

When we say extra ice, we mean LOTS of extra ice. A common mistake made by baristas when between the cold coffee for the coffee tonic is that they do not use enough ice in the process.

When making the perfect coffee tonic, we recommend pouring the tonic water over the ice and let it sit while you prepare the espresso. This allows the tonic to get crisp and cold before you add the espresso.

People favour making a slightly “fruiter” espresso to add to the tonic. Just like the much-love gin and tonic, the drink requires some character and flavour in order to be enjoyed to its full potential.

The Flavours and Experience

The overall experience of a coffee tonic depends entirely on the methods and the flavours used. When you take your first sip of you coffee tonic, you’ll be greeted with a mixture of inviting sensations.

The classic smell of coffee mixed with the crisp, cold bubbles of the tonic water will provide a unique sensation that’ll leave you feeling cool and refreshed.

When it comes to flavours, coffee tonics can range from bold to subtle and this entirely depends on the tonic water or type of coffee used.

If you’re looking for something brighter, a tonic with more acidic note such as the Fever Tree Mediterranean Tonic would be the perfect choice to add to your espresso and wonderful for summer.

You can also choose to garnish your coffee tonic with different fruits or botanicals. The most popular toppings include dark, sweet currents or rosemary, with both toppings offering your senses with completely different experiences.

Is Coffee Tonic the Right Drink for You?

As with any new drink, it can either be a love or hate relationship. If you’re someone who likes their coffee to be warm, wholesome and comforting, then perhaps the coffee tonic isn’t for you.

However, if you’re someone who craves the ice cold refreshness of a colder coffee drink, then the coffee tonic is perfect for you.

  1. I’ve had the chance to try an Espresso Tonic for the first time a few months ago and then recreated it myself at home. With bright, light-bodied blends it can be great, while I’ve not liked any made with darker roasts. As a garnish, lemon works better than lime, strangely. For a summer drink is awesome, my objective is to mix it with my own cold brew sometimes and find the perfect combination of blend, tonic water and garnish 🙂
