Decluttering Your Home This Spring

As we make our way further into the month, there may be some of you questioning how the last two months have gone by in the blink of an eye. Believe us; we are asking the same thing! While that may well be the case, as we make our way closer to the warmer summer months, there does not appear like a better time than now to start considering and planning your Spring clean.

There will be some people reading this and beyond who do a deep clean of their home every year, but there will be others who are just starting out on this somewhat ‘traditional’ habit. If you are someone who is decluttering their home or giving it a Spring clean for the first time ever, then you are in luck!

Detailed below are but some of the ways that you can declutter your home this Spring. What better time than to get rid of the old and making space for the new than now? While that is the case, this can be an often-monumental task; read on for some inspiration on where to start!

Making a List

Whether this is a list of the items that are within a specific room in your home or a list of the rooms in your home that need decluttering, the choice is entirely up to you.

That being the case, having a plan to hand, detailing what you want to sort out, enables you to be focused throughout the decluttering process. While it can be easy to get distracted by items that you find when decluttering and downsizing – we have all been there! – this is an excellent way of keeping yourself on track.

Not to mention, you will have a better idea of what you would like to keep or what you would prefer to get rid of, which leads us on to the next point.

Sorting and Storing Your Belongings

Off the back of the last point, once you have decided which room you will tackle, it is time to sort through the belongings in that particular room. When doing something like this, many people like to use the rule of six, which relates to whether you have used an item in the last six months and whether you are likely to use it in the next six months.

If you have found that you have answered no to both of those statements, then it may be worth getting rid of the item and making room for your existing stuff, as well as new things!

Once you have distinguished the items that you would like to donate to a charity or sell second-hand – you will have a little bit more income to go towards your next travels! – you may well begin thinking about what to do with the items that you would like to keep a hold of.

If you are looking for ways to declutter your home while also be able to access your belongings, using local storage options, including that of Safestore, is one way of doing so. You will have somewhere safe and secure, will still be able to access your belongings at any time of the day while freeing up some space in your home. Ideal if you ask us.

Cleaning Up

We can all admit to things getting a bit dusty and messy while you are doing a declutter of your home, and this type of thing goes hand-in-hand with cleaning your home afterwards. There is no surprise that we get motivated while sorting things out, and this could well extend into deciding to deep clean your home while you are at it.

That being said, this is an ideal thing to do when decluttering your home. You can tidy the areas that would have previously been used for storing your belongings and either uses them for other items that you own or for a different purpose. The choice is entirely up to you.
