Helping Your Child Develop Critical Thinking Skills

Critical thinking skills are perhaps the skills your child will most need to call upon when they’re an adult. Critical thinking works on the ability to analyse and make decisions based on the information available, which in turn to lead into decision making capabilities. Your kids will need those kinds of skills to develop in both education and in life. With the help of an Independent College in London, here are some pointers on how you can help your child develop their critical thinking skills.

Ask Questions

Asking questions about your kids interests and aspects of their life is important to help them think more critically about what is going on in their lives. Asking them why they think certain things are the way they are, or asking them about how something makes them feel will encourage them to think more deeply about the subject in question, using critical thinking skills in the process.

Don’t Micromanage

Try not to coddle your children too much. Leaving them to their own devices from time to time is a very informal way of allowing them to stretch their critical thinking muscles. Allowing them to figure out solutions to problems themselves will help them develop independence and confidence that they have the capacity to figure things out by themselves.

Encourage Agreements & Disagreements

Making sure you’re having conversations in which you share your opinions is a great way to get your children using critical thinking skills. Talking about what they feel about a film, a story, or an event in their life will encourage your child to be more considerate about why they hold their opinions. It may lead to some arguments, but as long as you keep your cool, arguments can be an effective means of using critical thinking skills, as they do their best to express their point of view.
