Should I Encourage My Child to Learn an Instrument?

It’s important to encourage your child to pursue some sort of hobby, as this will allow them to develop new skills, grow in confidence, and support their mental and/or physical health. Learning an instrument, for instance, is great for youngsters because it teaches them the importance of commitment and can relax them after a hard day at school. I have teamed up with an independent school in London to share some more benefits of learning an instrument to help you decide if it’s a good option for your child.

Provides a Sense of Accomplishment

All children need to accomplish things in order to feel good about themselves and grow in confidence. Learning an instrument can certainly help provide this sense of fulfilment, especially as they become more proficient. When they are able to successfully perform a piece of music without making a mistake, they will feel immensely proud of themselves, which will encourage them to persevere and potentially even pursue new hobbies.

Teaches Time Management Skills

Children who learn an instrument will not only have to factor music lessons into their schedule but also a daily practice. This is great for teaching them time management skills and helping them learn how to prioritise.

Boosts Academic Performance

Studies have found that learning an instrument can actually benefit a child academically. This could be for a range of reasons. When learning an instrument, they have to engage their brain and focus their attention, while also using their memory to play the right notes. They have to read musical notes and focus on rhythm, which can help with their maths skills. What’s more, the boost in confidence they receive by developing their skills in music will help them feel more comfortable at school.

Teaches Perseverance

Learning an instrument requires a lot of practice, it’s not a skill that can be developed overnight. With that said, it’s great for teaching children to persevere and commit themselves to something, even if it feels challenging at times.
