The Yorkshire Dales is a beautiful and picturesque region located in northern England. It is renowned for its stunning landscapes, charming villages, lush green valleys, and rolling hills.
The Dales are part of the larger Pennines, a range of hills and mountains stretching across the north of England. There is so much to explore, do and see that I would recommend you spend more than just a weekend out there. And it is better to plan your journey wisely.
What is the best time to visit the Yorkshire Dales?
I quite like to travel during the spring or the start of Autumn. Ultimately, the best time to visit the Yorkshire Dales depends on your interests and what you want to experience. My visit to the Dales was in April. The weather was pleasant during most of all weeks.
If you’re looking for more outdoor activities and a livelier atmosphere, spring and summer might be preferable.
For a more peaceful experience and a chance to see stunning autumn scenery, consider visiting in September or October. Winter is great if you enjoy a quieter atmosphere and the charm of a winter wonderland.
How to plan your trip to the Yorkshire Dales?
If you are driving to the Dales, I would recommend you use maps or navigation apps to plan your route based on your starting location. The Yorkshire Dales cover a wide area, so decide which part you want to visit.
England is famous for its listed buildings and National Trust iconic houses. I think it is better to consider making a list of the attractions you want to see and the activities you want to do, whether it’s hiking, exploring villages, or enjoying the natural beauty.
There is quite a lot of driving to be done, so, make sure you plan your journey in a practical way.
The Dales are dotted with picturesque villages and small towns that offer a glimpse into traditional English country life. Some notable places include Hawes, Grassington, Malham, and Settle.
How to Get to the Yorkshire Dales?
I have been to the Dales by car. It was due to the fact we live in the Midlands. For us, it is easier to drive to the north or to the south.
But if you’re not travelling by car, you can consider renting a car upon arriving at a nearby city or airport. You can have some train connections and reach Yorkshire by bus too.
Additionally, various transportation services, such as private hire cars and guided tours, can help you explore the Yorkshire Dales without worrying about the logistics.
Before you travel, it’s also a good idea to check for any travel restrictions, road closures, or changes in transportation schedules. Also, be sure to have a map or navigation app handy, as some parts of the Dales might not have strong mobile network coverage.

The views from our cottage were also highlighted by the hills and valleys. We stayed in a quite small village called Hawkswick.

However, within the Yorkshire Dales National Park, there are several distinct areas, valleys, and landmarks that contribute to the park’s unique character. Here are some of the notable “dales” (valleys) and areas within the Yorkshire Dales National Park. We have visited many spots in the area.
Arncliffe has also made its mark in the world of film and television. It’s renowned as the original location for the fictional village of Beckinsdale in the soap opera “Emmerdale” (formerly known as “Emmerdale Farm”).
The village’s timeless charm and captivating surroundings have made it a sought-after filming location for various productions, drawing attention to its beauty and authenticity.
The famous pub used in the soap opera is actually a great countryside pub and should be visited by any tourist around that area. Despite knowing about its connection to the soap or not.
Nestled in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales, Arncliffe is a charming village that encapsulates the quintessential English countryside experience. With its cobblestone streets, historic buildings, and breathtaking natural surroundings, Arncliffe offers a glimpse into a bygone era while remaining a vibrant community in the present day.
Including as well a visit to Wensleydale Creamery, known for its picturesque villages, rolling hills, and the bustling market town of Hawes. The famous Wensleydale Creamery, where Wensleydale cheese is produced, is also located here.
The Dales are known for their delicious local produce, including cheeses like Wensleydale and various traditional foods.
Waterfalls
The Dales are home to several impressive waterfalls, such as Aysgarth Falls and Ingleton Waterfalls Trail, which are popular with visitors.

The Malham Cove walk was amazing. I would recommend anyone to do it. We started from our cottage and the day was fulfilled with stunning landscapes. I am also preparing a new post to talk about this walk. While not a traditional cove, Malham Cove is a massive limestone cliff with a distinct curved shape. It’s a popular natural landmark and attracts many visitors.
