Mastering Moves: A Guide to House Moving Etiquette

It has been one year since I moved to my new home, and I totally believe that planning the moving process carefully has helped us to be pretty much settled quickly. Yes, moving houses can be a stressful and busy task.

Planning the whole process ideally 2 to 3 months before your move-in date is fundamental. I have start packing my things way before having the keys of my new home in hands. This way, I had ample time to organise everything.

I think that by following this organised approach to it, you can speed up the process, reduce the stress associated with moving and ensure a successful transition to your new home.

As important as planning is also to remember that there are certain etiquette guidelines to follow to ensure a smooth transition and maintain good relationships with neighbours.

After all, moving house etiquettes are important because they promote respect, safety, and efficiency during the moving process.

They also help to create a positive experience for everyone involved and contribute to building strong community relationships.

Following these etiquettes not only ensures a smoother move but also reflects well on your character and reputation.

Notify Neighbours in Advance

To be honest, I don’t think it is a thing here in the UK. I don’t remember any neighbour knocking on my door before you move. I also think people would find it a bit intrusive to be honest.

However, notifying your neighbours and obtaining necessary permits for large moves, may also be legal requirements in certain areas. Failing to follow these rules can lead to fines or legal issues.

And if you would make a good impression following some etiquette rules it’s courteous to let your neighbours know about your plans. Share your moving date and any potential disruptions, such as moving trucks blocking driveways or increased noise. This gives them a heads-up and allows them to plan accordingly.

Being considerate of your neighbours and staying organised will go a long way in making your move a positive experience for all.

If you are moving to a location with limited parking, don’t forget to be informed on how to reserve a parking space for the moving truck or van. This prevents inconveniencing your neighbours and avoids potential towing issues.

Avoiding peak times can be also helpful. If possible, try to schedule your move during non-peak hours or on weekends when your neighbours are less likely to be affected by the activity

Hire Professional Movers

I know it is a personal choice, but I still believe that sometimes, hiring professional movers that provides full-service moving can help minimise disruptions to your neighbours and ensure a more efficient move.

Begin your search for professional movers well in advance of your move date, preferably a couple of weeks before can be an excellent way of comparing quotes and book your chosen movers.

Make sure to provide them with detailed information about your move to get accurate estimates. Also, be prepared, make a list of questions to ask potential movers.

These may include questions about their experience, equipment, packing services, and any additional fees.

Look for a reputable moving company that provides the right quotation and all information about the move procedure, whether you need a London packing service or at any other city of the UK.

After signing all papers and gathering the necessary documentation about your move contract, you can wait for the big day. And of course, be present on moving day to oversee the process and answer any questions the movers may have.

Dispose of Unwanted Items Responsibly

Let’s be honest, moving homes is a perfect excuse to re-think about unnecessary things we keep at home. We all have items that are cluttering our home for so many years.

By disposing of unwanted items responsibly, you not only reduce the environmental impact of your move but also leave your old home in a better state for the next occupants.

Additionally, it can save you money on moving expenses by reducing the amount of stuff you need to transport. The process of disposing unwanted items can be a bit tricky. It is important to be well informed about what to do with all furniture that won`t be making to the new home.

Remember: Never leave unwanted items or trash on the curb. Arrange for proper disposal, recycling, or donation of these items. Leaving a mess behind is inconsiderate to your old and new neighbours.

The same process is valid to the new address. Look for information about recycling sites or bins in your new residential location. This way, all rubbish and recyclable materials will be placed in the correct space provided, and you won’t have to worry about neighbour.

Be Mindful of Noise

You probably already noticed but the truth is that moving out often involves loud noises, especially when moving furniture or using drills or other power tools. I know it is difficult to avoid it. And think on my last moving, I probably was a bit noisier than I wanted.

So, it is better to prepare yourself, trying your best to limit noisy activities to reasonable hours and avoid making excessive noise early in the morning or late at night.

Also, make sure that items are securely packed in resistant boxes and won’t shift during transportation.

I tried to bring loose items in the car, way before the whole heavy furniture was moved to the new home. This way, we avoid causing extra noise during the main move day.

Moving homes is a stressful process, so it is better to plan it in a smoothy way. For this reason, doing it in an adequate way is essential to respect the peace and quietness of those around you.
